Share Your Favorite 4th of July Memories

My favorite July 4th memory occurred on America's bicentennial, July 4th 1976.

As background to the story I was born in England and my family moved to the USA in 1970. In May of 1975 I became a US Citizen and in June of 1975 I graduated from high school and enlisted in the US Navy.

On July 4th, 1976, for America's bicentennial, the ship I was assigned to, USS Horne CG-30 was designated to be the "open house" for tours in downtown San Diego and our captain made sure that "that young Englishman" was one of his tour guides. I had a great time showing folks around the ship, proud to be part of my new adopted country and proud to serve.

One of my most exciting 4th of July experiences was watching the fireworks display over the lake in my hometown. The sky was filled with colorful explosions of light, reflecting off the water below. The atmosphere was electric, with live music and delicious BBQ filling the air. It was a wonderful celebration of independence and freedom, surrounded by friends and family.

Spending every fourth of July celebrating independence day and my Daughters birthday with our friends and family. We usually start the day off going to the parade then its back home to fire up the grill to feed the masses. Topped off with an amazing fireworks display over lake Ontario. Our favorite time was when we convinced our daughter that it was all done for her birthday.

My most memorable experience was when we visited friends in New York City a couple of years ago in 2022 and we watched the Fireworks Over on the East River. All I can say is, it was absolutely amazing! It was almost 30 minutes long with music and designs to go with the fireworks. The whole Skyline was light up with Red, White and Blue! The Empire State Building was light up in Red, White and Blue and they were shooting them off from 3 huge barges. I have seen Fireworks in Tampa, Florida over our Bay in Downtown over the water. It was nice but the ones in New York, it was 1000 times better! I got goose bumps watching, it was really an emotional moment just to be there and be able to experience it and it was such a patriotic moment for sure.

I remember a Fourth of July from when I was much younger - we were visiting family in St. Louis and went down to this huge festival the city holds every year around the Fourth. I had never seen anything to that scale and was blown away by both the heat (I still remember the sweat) and the joy of this giant summer celebration. The absolutely epic fireworks were the perfect finish to the day 🎆
