Classic Grilled Cheeseburger

Grilled Cheese BBQ Cheeseburger for everything you love about a grilled cheese, now with a juicy beef patty, crispy onions and BBQ sauce!

Ingredients

For the burgers:
--1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend is ideal)
--Salt & black pepper
--2 slices of cheese (American, cheddar, or your choice)
--2 burger buns
--Butter (for toasting buns)

For the caramelized onions:
--1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
--1 tbsp butter
--1 tbsp olive oil
--Pinch of salt
--1 tsp sugar (optional, helps browning)
--Splash of water or balsamic vinegar (optional, for deglazing)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Ⅰ. Caramelize the Onions
1.In a skillet over medium-low heat, melt butter and olive oil.
2.Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Stir occasionally for 25–30 minutes.
3.Optional: Add sugar for quicker browning and splash of water or vinegar if pan gets dry.
4.Onions should be deep golden brown and sweet. Set aside.

Ⅱ. Cook the Burgers
1.Divide ground beef into 2 patties (don’t overwork it).
2.Press a slight dimple in the center of each patty to prevent puffing.
3.Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
4.Heat a skillet or grill to medium-high. Cook patties for 3–4 min per side for medium.
5.Add cheese slices during the last minute of cooking, cover to melt.

Ⅲ. Toast the Buns
1.Lightly butter the inside of the buns.
2.Toast on a pan or grill until golden.

Ⅳ. Assemble
1.Place burger patty on bottom bun.
2.Top with a heap of caramelized onions.
3.Add other toppings if desired.
4.Cap with top bun and serve hot.
